Ted distinguishes himself through a good eye for a good picture, in creating images that tell a coherent story. ![]() That takes a lot of time, pa- tience and talent. Therefore, Ted finds it important to observe his subject, contemplating the character of humans and animals, their vulnerability or imperfection. ‘The most important thing is not the camera but the eye’ the German-American press photographer Alfred Eisens- taedt once aptly said. His dream to go into the world with his camera, to give meaning to events by telling stories through his photography.įor ‘story telling’ more is needed than a good camera and a photogenic subject. Ted worked for magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and Esquire, but eventually followed his heart and dream. After his studies he went to Jakarta as photographer for MRA Printed Media. He studied photography at the vocational photography school in Amsterdam and specialized in portrait and documentary photography. The family wishes to thank Kindred Hospice of Grand Rapids for their compassion and care shown to Leo during his last days here on earth and a big thank you to Appledorn Assisted Living South for their constant attention and care while Leo was with them. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. Leo is survived by his three brothers, Wayne (Kathy) VanDerHulst, Paul (Bonnie) VanDerHulst and Randy (Barb) VanDerHulst his sister, Joan (Mike) VanderKooi and his best friend for over 60 years, John Denuyl. His enthusiasm for life made Leo a great person to be around. If he wasn’t tinkering with tools, he enjoyed fishing, especially in the Gulf of Mexico. He was able to help out friends and family alike with his mechanical abilities. Leo worked as a mechanic most of his life, though, since he loved it so much and was very talented at it, it never seemed like work. Born March 3, 1941, in Holland, Michigan, he was the son of the late Albert and Alyda (Grotenhuis) VanDerHulst. Leo VanDerHulst, 81 of Holland, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, Augat Appledorn Assisted Living South in Holland, Michigan. Chappell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
